The Cost of Enforcement

The DMMA proposal for restrictions on Short-Term Rentals does not provide a detailed overview of how they plan to ‘enforce’ and pay for such. DMMA staff & proponents of the rental restrictions have offered that additional staff be hired and dedicated to monitoring owner-directed and managed Web sites for listing their properties, such as VRBO & Airbnb. At present a $1,000 fine is planned to be assessed against an owner who lists their property themselves on one of these Websites.

However, DMMA plans to provide exceptions to short term rentals if an owner is pre-approved by DMMA and goes through their system. Owners are not trusted to properly vet or manage their properties themselves and would be required to ‘pay’ for DMMA services.

Additionally, staff would be hired to monitor gate access for owners who have listed properties for rent, regardless of duration of the rental. Guests of these owners would be potentially denied access. Owners themselves have already found their passes deactivated, even if their properties are not rented.

The cost and funding of ‘policing’ DM owners is not yet determined, but one can expect an increase in DMMA budget and an eventual increase in dues.

The Desert Mountain owner and Club member is of the highest caliber, sophisticated and quite capable of ‘policing’ themselves. No one can truly desire the beginnings of a ‘police’ state for our wonderful community.
